At the heart of Child Alaska is a simple belief: culture and language are not extras in learning—they are the foundation. Our name, CHILD, stands for Cultural Heritage Improves Learning & Development. It reflects what we see every day with children: when learning is connected to who they are, where they come from, and the people around them, it becomes stronger, more meaningful, and lasting.
CHILD resources are created in relationship—with families, Elders, language speakers, and community educators whose knowledge and experiences guide what children see and do. Rather than treating culture as a separate topic, learning is woven through stories, seasonal activities, language, art, and time on the land. This helps children recognize themselves and their communities in learning and grow with a sense of belonging.
Being rooted in culture means honoring many voices and ways of knowing. CHILD exists to support educators and families in learning alongside community partners, so children’s growth is grounded in identity, connection, and place.
