Traditional Beading & Sewing
Kit Lessons
Dentalium Shells & Maqaq Game
Students will learn about Dentalium shells and how beads were used for trade. They will learn to play a game and make designs with the shells. Extension activities are included for music and art/writing.
Sewing Kit
Kakivik or "sewing bag" usually held woman’s needles, thimble, sinew thread, and a small knife. Some men would also carry them to repair clothing or kayaks. Children will learn what a kakivik is and how to take care of the tools inside. Activity extensions are included for a nature walk and a read-aloud using Teri Sloan's book "Berry Magic".
Using Beads to Make Color Patterns
Students will continue to use their kakivik ("sewing bag"), using beads to learn about beading, colors, and patterning. Extension activities are included for a fine motor jewelry station, nature walk and the writing center.
