BRIDGE LITERACY KITS
How to Use the Kits
Literacy Checkout Bags
Our BRIDGE Family Literacy Kits are designed to help families read, explore, and learn together while connecting literacy to Alaska’s land, culture, and community. Each kit follows the BRIDGE framework—Borrow, Read, Investigate, Design, Grow, Explore—so families can enjoy meaningful stories, hands-on activities, and creative challenges.
Kits are available in two formats:
-
Robust Bag Kit: Each bag includes a plush, a toy (often custom-made), two books (one Alaska relevant fiction and one informational book), and a deck of activity cards on a ring. We have 14 topics available.
-
Simplifed Pouches: Each pouch contains a finger puppet, two books, and a laminated front-and-back activity sheet with the BRIDGE activities.
Tips for Success
These 14 kits are designed to engage families in hands-on, story-centered learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. These kits offer an easy and meaningful way to bridge home and school learning.
Before sending a kit home, take a few minutes to introduce the theme and model one or two activities.
Encourage families to explore the stories together, talk about their own experiences, and celebrate what they learn.
Invite children to share their favorite parts when they return, whether through drawings, photos, or short stories.
