Languages
Language learning in preschool grows through daily routines, relationships, and shared experiences. Our approach supports both classroom and home language development by weaving language into play, storytelling, transitions, and community connections—honoring how children learn together and alongside others.
-
Home, Classroom, & Community Connections: Curricular resources support language learning across school settings, family engagement opportunities, and community-based events.
-
Shared Learning Pathways: Using a grant-funded PK–3rd Language Learning Tool, children work as a class or individually through four learning pathways, earning stickers as they demonstrate understanding and complete shared or personal projects that showcase their learning.
-
Community & Language Partners: Our work strives to honor the knowledge, voices, and leadership of language speakers and cultural partners across our region.
PreK Language Pathway Tool
Teachers use this tool to support language learning across the classroom, in small groups, or through individual exploration. Language is embedded into daily routines, play, songs, stories, and seasonal activities, with learning made visible through shared experiences and celebration.
-
Integrate language into daily routines and instruction using the four learning pathways (Introductions, Seasonal Activities, Weather Phrases, and Conversation) to guide class-wide, small-group, or individual learning experiences.
-
Support student-created projects that demonstrate language knowledge through art, storytelling, movement, or play.
-
Use stickers and checkpoints to recognize participation, effort, and growth rather than mastery.
-
Create opportunities for sharing by inviting children to present their learning with peers, families, elders, or community members.
-
Observe and reflect on language growth to inform instruction and celebrate progress, not to formally assess performance.
