What is Vesicular Basalt Rock?
Rocks are an important part of the steam bath and this lesson will engage children right from the start as they explore reactions and make a volcano explode. This highly engaging lesson teaches about magma and how rocks are formed, specifically the vesicular basalt rock. Activity extensions are included for getting outdoors and a challenge to visit a local steam bath.
What is Steam?
Steam is a fascinating concept for children and the main component in steam baths. In this lesson, children will have the opportunity to experiment with heat to learn what steam is, how it is made, and the benefits of it. The extension activity will take children outdoors to find naturally produced steam.
What is Dry Wood?
Children will conclude their exploration of the science behind steam baths as they learn what the best wood to burn. They will compare and contrast dry and wet wood through a 2 day sensory and weighing experiment. This lesson is full of math and has fun extensions for writing and building centers.
