Retelling the Story

Anesia Newyaka grew up in Kokhanok traveling around the Lake Iliamna area with her father and step-mother. Together, they gathered and harvested food at different places during different times of the year. Often they packed their own food and supplies and lived off of the land for months on end, but they always returned to Kokhanok during the early summer months to put up fish at fishcamp. Anesia remembers this story of the ‘Hairy man’ or ‘Agguuluggak’ well from the time she was young and her father told it to her. Often children did not play late at night and definatly not alone because they were told that the ‘Hairyman’ would be out during that time. Although many would argue in the existence of this elusive creature, Anesia’s recapturing of the story illustrates more about humanity then the actual creature itself.
